Fireworks are beautiful but very scary to our pets…

June 28, 2014 by admin

Does your dog or cat get very anxious during fireworks? Do you do everything to try to help him but can’t get him/her to calm down?? Do they pace back and forth, pant, run and hide, or something else?? Then I have the solution for you!

Below are a few tips to help your pets during the Fourth of July and during the fireworks.

Tip 1:

Homeopathic products are great for naturally calming any anxieties, fears and stress in
your pets life.  No matter what the form they come in, chews, treats, or sprays, they all work great to help ease your pets frayed nerves.

The important ingredients to look for are those that are all natural such as lavender, thiamine (vitamin B1), or theanine.  Essential oils are also useful such as lavender, marjoram, bergamot, and ylang ylang.

These all-natural products natural allow you to naturally settle your pets nerves and treat anxiety. These products are very useful during any stressful time in your pets life such as traveling, grooming, holidays, vet visits, thunderstorms, introductions to new environments and especially fireworks!

imageThe all natural combination of ingredients helps to soothe both the mind AND the body so the pet just doesn’t care anymore about the causes of the stress. Many of the prescription calming medicines will calm either the body or the mind but not both. Imagine if your pet is fearful of fireworks, gets a medicine that calms his body so he can’t move but he is still fearful in the mind. That would stress him out even more!

Imagine if you couldn’t move when you were scared??

I recommend products like Earth Hearts Canine Calm or Travel Calm sprays or Pet Naturals of Vermont Calming Chews.

The Thundershirt is also a great, new pressure wrap that applies a gentle, constant pressure on a dog’s torso. The Thundershirt is like a constant, calming hug for your dog!

Contact us if you would like more info on any of these products.

Tip 2

Leave your pet at home! Don’t bring them to the fireworks if you don’t have to.

Tip 3:

If you can’t leave your pet at home, play with your pet during the fireworks. This helps to take their mind off of the fireworks. Play with their favorite toy. Make it real fun for them. Talk to them and get them excited about the toy and the play, not the fireworks.

Tip 4:

Avoid coddling, hugging or petting your dog when they are fearful for this act will reinforce their fear. You will be rewarding that behavior.  Also, avoid scolding for that will scare and confuse the animal.

Tip 5:

Let your pet sit in a darkened room or in their crate during the fireworks.

How to read a pet food label

When you are at the grocery store buying food for your family for the week, you look at the nutrition labels to determine if the item is high in calories, sodium, fat, etc. You also look at the ingredients to make sure they are good for you. Do you do the same when looking for food and treats for your pets? Pets need good quality food too. Eating a healthy, natural diet will extend the life of your pets and they will be happier too. Their coat and skin will be softer, breath will be fresher, shedding will decrease and more! Imagine if you ate Fast Food every day for every meal for years, you wouldn’t be feeling to healthy either…and you would probably be overweight and out of shape too. Think of the lower quality pet food as their fast food.

So why is dental care important for pets?

Most of us see the benefit of daily brushing, twice yearly cleanings, and regular dental X-rays for ourselves. And though dogs don’t eat the wide range of cavity-causing foods we enjoy, they need regular dental care for many of the same reasons we do:

  • To prevent the build-up of plaque, tartar, and calculus
  • To check for and prevent gingivitis and gum disease
  • To look for trauma, such as broken or fractured teeth
  • To inspect for developmental or orthodontic problems

Spay/Neuter Awareness Month

January 27, 2013 by admin

February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month!

spayneuterAccording to HumaneSociety.org, there are an estimated 6-8 million homeless kittens, puppies, cats, and dogs nationwide that enter animal shelters every year. Only about half of those animals are adopted. Tragically, the other half are put down or spend most of their lives crated in shelters. The majority of animals that are euthanized are healthy, sweet pets who would have made great companions but due to overcrowding in the shelters, they are not able to meet their forever families.

My Pet has Fleas…What do I do??

January 20, 2013 by admin

dog-boxer-lounging-couch-sofa-650x290Imagine this… you are lounging with your dog on the couch, snuggling, watching your favorite TV show.  All of a sudden, your previously relaxed pooch gets up flea funnyabruptly and starts biting at his feet or tail or starts scratching his neck or ears.  You take a closer look at the area that he was just scratching and EEP! You see a flea jump out of your grasp before you can get him.  What do you do?  Do you make your pooch go outside, give him a bath immediately, or further inspect him to see if there are any other fleas.  I recommend the latter.

Hot Spots, Dermatitis, Mange & Random Skin Irritations

January 16, 2013 by admin

Allergies, hot spots, dermatitis, mange….just a few irritating issues that can affect your pet’s skin.  Some more serious than the others, but all can cause your pet to  scratch uncontrollably, itch everywhere and just be miserable.

dog-allergies

Pets can have allergic reactions to many different stimuli.  The hard part is figuring out the cause and the corresponding solution.  Anytime you see something on your pet that concerns you or you are unsure of,  contact us for advise or go to the vet…better to be safe than sorry.  Feel free to text or email us pictures as well.

Most skin issues will not be life threatening (except in very young or very old pets), but you always want to err on the side of caution when it comes to your furry family members.   Visible skin irritations and rashes may appear suddenly or progressively get worse over a period of time.  What you need to know is how to handle these issues but first you need to have an understanding of what it is.

Run in yard vs Long Walk

January 12, 2013 by admin

Which is better….letting your dog out in the back yard or taking him on a walk? Some may say letting your pup run around in the back yard is better, and it is good, but nothing compares to taking your dog for a nice long walk. During this walk, you and your pup bond (which is very important for new puppy’s or newly adopted dogs). He also gets exercise for he is working both the mind and the body during the walk. He needs to follow your direction while taking in all the smells in the area. When his mind is stimulated and he is actively moving, their anxiety and energy levels decrease, they feel better, and they become easier to train.

Tip #6 – We all need a den to escape to…

December 11, 2011 by admin

We may not want to lock our pets away in a separate room or a crate, and we don’t necessarily have to, when we have options.  Training all year long is recommended so your pets are used to strangers and children.  You can work with a trainer, or self educate by reading dog training blogs and books.  Plus I am always here to answer any questions you may have.  During the festivities though, be sure your pets have a safe, quiet place to escape to when they need to.  If your pet is an escape artist and tends to dart out the door, then definitely put them in a separate room until all your guests have arrived or the trick-or-treating is done.

If your dog is overly excited when new people visit and tend to jump, and working with a trainer is not an option, then the best solution is to separate them until the excitement of everyone arriving is over.  Another option to calm excited or anxious pets is to give them some Rescue Remedy or Pet Calm, which calms your pets naturally with chamomile, lavender, and other calming herbs.  The Thundershirt is also a great, new pressure wrap that applies a gentle, constant pressure on a dog’s torso. The Thundershirt is like a constant, calming hug for your dog!

Inviting guests over prior to the party to introduce them to your pets properly would help with the anxiety as well.  This will help teach your dog how to introduce themselves to newcomers and to learn not to jump and get overly excited.  Also, provide plenty of socialization by bringing your dogs to the dog park and taking them for walks.  This gets them used to being around other people, children and other dogs.
